The Nebraska Department of Revenue announced, in light of the massive damage and loss of life caused recently by Hurricane Katrina, that it will follow special relief rules for taxpayers in the 31 Louisiana parishes, 15 Mississippi counties, and 3 Alabama counties included in the Internal Revenue Service’s Informational Release 2005-84 which announced the declaration of the Presidential Disaster Area. See the listing of all affected areas at the IRS Web site at http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/.

These taxpayers will have until October 15, 2005, to file sales, withholding, and income tax returns and submit tax payments. Any late filing or late payment penalties will be abated by the department. This includes the September 15 due date for estimated taxes and for calendar-year corporate returns with automatic extensions.

Taxpayers seeking the special relief should mark “Hurricane Katrina” in red letters on the top of any such return.
